Job Purpose: This is an entry level position.  The ID worker will work with journeyman glaziers and learn the trade.  This position is part of the International Union of Painter’s and Allied Trades.   This position will advance to apprenticeship and union schooling.  A commercial glazier is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in cutting, installing, and replacing glass and other materials (such as aluminum or steel framing systems) used in the construction of commercial and residential settings.  This includes structures like office buildings, schools, hospitals, shopping centers, high-rises, residential homes and apartments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Installing windows, curtain walls, skylights, and glass panels in large-scale commercial projects
  • Measuring and marking glass or mirror products for installation
  • Assembling and installing metal framing for glass systems
  • Ensuring glass and framing systems are sealed and weatherproofed
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and construction plans
  • Install architectural aluminum window systems, glass handrails, mirrors, door entrances and decorative wall systems in commercial and residential buildings
  • Glaziers (also known as architectural glass and metal technicians) work with one of the most fascinating, versatile materials of all – glass

 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Experience within the construction industry is preferred
  • Fluent in English, both oral and written required
  • Effective communicator in terms of both verbal and written skills
  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching
  • Regular travel to job sites is required, must be able to pass Motor Vehicle review
  • Ability to read and correctly interpret construction plans/drawings and specifications
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
  • Must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced, ever changing working environment
  • Technically competent and able to effectively communicate with customers, General contractors and co-workers

Work Environment: Glaziers work in a variety of settings and throughout the seasons.  Often exposed to weather related conditions.  Completing work both inside and outside of the project building.

The work environment can vary significantly depending on the project, but will generally include the following:    physical activity, including lifting heavy glass (75-pound max, per glazier), standing for extended periods, and working at heights.  Must be comfortable using ladders, scaffolding, and other equipment to reach high places.  Safety is paramount in this role.  Glaziers must adhere to all safety policies and procedures.

Glaziers work as a part of a team, coordinating with other construction professionals such as carpenters, electricians, and plumbers to ensure the successful completion of projects.  Effective communication and teamwork is essential.

Work hours can vary based on project deadlines and client needs.  While standard daytime hours are most common, glaziers may occasionally need to work evenings, weekends, or overtime to meet project deadlines.
